Experiments in Letter press printing

Last semsester I was the Teaching Assistant at the Design Lab in the Department. Part of the lab is a collection of antique American wood typefaces - The Rob Roy Kelly Collection. The images here, are some of my first experiments with letter press printing. I used discarded sheets of paper to print 'notices' for the lab. The fun in these experiments was working with a prescribed format (the discarded sheets of experimentation from other students) and superimposing upon them to create a new thing.

Of course - the intricate methodology that setting up the typefaces for printing was - was is own learning and joy.

The Chair - process documentation

I've been working on constructing a bent laminated chair in my class in Wood Design. Its been a great diversion from the work i do towards my thesis - and an immense education towards the value of iteration and process in design. Not that I needed to be convinced - but, a lot of my process in design (after all these years) tacit. Working in wood - a material I definately did not have a lot of hands on experience with before - made the iterative process and my learning curve very EXPLICIT.

Its certainly a labour of love (and hate, frustration, annoyance, tears, giddy headedness - scratches, blood and fear).

Egg Nest.

The result of my first assignment in Wood Shop - A cross laminated - egg shaped (though more like winnie the pooh's honey pot) - hand shaped and sanded - birdhouse in pine wood. All in all quite pleased with the result - especially since it was the first time I was using any of the equipment and methods. Foolishly neglected to document the thing fully finished with top lid, hanging hook and drainage and ventilation slits.

I just returned from the Joy workshop in Vinalhaven. It was marvellous! The workshops, the people, the island - the almost absolute lack of encroachment from the outside world! Very highly recommended! I have promised myself to go to as many of these as possible!
Also, as part of my internship with PH this summer, I am taking on the part of quasi archivist for this wonderful organization. More web and writing work coming my way! Yea!
